Example Nomination for the Heroism Category:
My grandfather Joe Smith, started working in the coal mines when he was 16 and worked for over 40 years. He was involved in 3 mining disasters, and spent 14 hours saving the lives of two of unconscious co-workers in one of the disasters, at great peril of his own life. But that’s not why he is a hero to me. He is a hero because he worked hard every day of his life, never expecting gratitude from anyone, and he was always ready to take me fishing in the summer even after a hard day’s work. I love you Grampa.

Example Nomination for the Innovation Category:
My uncle Joe Smith worked in WV coal mines from 1984-1998. During his time there he worked on the electrical systems. His major contribution as far as I am concerned was the invention of more durable wiring that resisted moisture and physical damage better than existing products. Coal miners help keep the lights on, and he helped keep the coal miner’s lights on.

Example Nomination for the Community Service Category:

My neighbor, Joe Smith was a coal miner for as long I knew him. He passed away last spring, but his memory lives on. Time, and time again he could be found helping someone in our community with a plumbing problem, or splitting firewood for someone who was ill. At his funeral it seemed that there was no person he had not impacted in our community. He served on the volunteer fire department, was an active participant in our local government public meetings, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher at his local church, and would help anyone who needed help. I would like to nominate him posthumously for his contribution to our local community.
